Georgi Garner April 27, 1956 – February 19, 2019
Georgi took great comfort in knowing that the Emma Zen Foundation was able to do so much good with the memorial donations made by Joe’s family and friends after his death in July of 2017. With their love of the fire department, bikers and animals, supporting the foundation just seemed the perfect way to remember him.
Donations made in Joe’s memory purchased 60 Pet Oxygen Mask Kits that were distributed throughout the City of St. George, Utah, where he had received his treatments. Georgi selected St. George since the many wonderful doctors, nurses and support staff who had helped them lived in the area and it was a way to say thanks to them all. Very few things brought her happiness in the days after his death, but this certainly did.
It was no surprise that she would make the same memorial request as her own life drew to a close. She asked that the project to equip fire stations in St. George with Pet Oxygen Mask Kits continue in her memory and her family invites you to join with us by making a donation to the Emma Zen Foundation in lieu of flowers.
Georgi and Joe were kind and loving people who believed in making the world a better place by helping wherever they could. We were so fortunate to know them. Remembering them with these life saving kits for animals is a kind and loving way for us to honor our friends by following their lead and helping where we can too.

Joe Garner September 24, 1950 - July 1, 2017
Our Joe. A husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather. A man who loved his family, his friends, and his community. He also loved the fire department, motorcycles and animals, so of course, he loved Emma Zen too.
Joe was a career fire fighter who started as a teenage volunteer and worked his way up through the fire department ranks to Chief. And when he retired, he may have left the fire department, but the respect and love for the people he worked with through the years never left his heart.
After trying out the retirement thing for a little while and not loving it as much as he thought he would, Joe went to work selling Harley-Davidson Motorcycles. Another of his passions. He loved the bikes and the people he worked with, but I always felt that helping customers find that perfect bike and knowing all the joy they'd have riding, truly made this much more than just a job.
Then Joe & Georgi moved to Kanab, a small town in southern Utah that's also home to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Joe was part of the Angel's Rest Team, where he tended the beautiful pet cemetery and lovingly helped so many people honor their pets with a compassionate and respectful burial. He loved animals and he loved people too, so being at the sanctuary was a very happy place for Joe.
When Joe met Emma Zen a few years ago, I think he became her #1 Fan! The Emma Zen Foundation combines three things that he cared very deeply about: fire fighters, bikers and animals. As Joe & Georgi were discussing final arrangements, he requested that his family and friends make a donation to the Emma Zen Foundation in lieu of sending flowers.
For anyone who knew Joe, that's not a surprise at all, so the Garner Family invites you to join us in supporting Emma's work in his memory.
