The heart of our organization
Sometimes there is just this one dog..... You know what I mean if you have had pets in your life. That one soul who will always be the one who meant everything to you. For us that is our Em. We called her names like; Big Foot and Emma-licious both were descriptive. :-)
Emma Zen was displaced in the 2007 Santiago Canyon fires in California and ended up on the cold floor of a shelter behind bars at the age of 4 months. I, Debra Jo and President of the Emma Zen Foundation walked into the shelter one cold October day. There is the story about a chicken you can find on Emma Zen's website but needless to say I picked this dog. This dog who had many things going against her. She was 4 months, 40 pounds, solid black and in the shelter with a bunch of new puppies. The little dog was on a fire hold and I could not get a play date or take her out of the cage and I knew this dog was my heart, so I sat there, next to the cage all day. Looky loos would walk by and I'd take the card off the cage and say "oh I'm waiting for someone to get the key, she mine." on day two I took biscuit day three a toy. I stood there from 9 am to 5 pm everyday of her hold. On the fifth and final day the told me "first come first serve" the idea of loosing this animal to another person turned me upside down inside! I went home and tried to sleep. It didn't work. I woke up at 11 PM, 12 AM and then 1 AM.. I couldn't take it anymore, the thought.... So up I got in my jammies with a thermos of coffee a flash light and a book. I went to to OC Animal Care in Orange, CA and placed my back literally touching to the fence at the front of the facility. It was cold. It was dark and I was to tell the truth a little scared, but I was first! I was first! I WAS FIRST!!! I could feel it from the beginning and I still feel her as much today!
Emma Zen touched me and I am sure you have had a pet that has done the same for you too. But what I never expected was for her to touch so many others. She is this old soul in this little, okay not so little, black dog form. So many saw her due to all her activities; therapy, acting, modeling, sidecar riding and social media. So many feel in love with her. So many followed.
I am so proud that my dog taught me to do the right things. Showed me how to be for something instead of against something. Showed me how to help others and how to help myself. Taught me the importance of a good heart and gave ever lasting attention to a human who needed it. The Emma Zen Foundation was evoke out of a desire to keep her safe and the ability to tell others about it. To learn more about her please visit www.emmazen.com.

One of us picked up the ball and one of us ran with it,
I'm just not sure which one of us did which!

Our foundation allows us to focus on Pet Safety. All projects are close to the hearts of our "Board of Directors". While our main goal is to establish "Pet Oxygen Mask" on as life saving equipment for pets, we also host "TEAM Aid" and "TEAM Bark" programs. Our bi-laws also allow us to help other non profits and or animals in need. While we do not accept request for these you never know when a guardian angel will appear. Follow us on our social media page.
The heart of our program is encased in a dog, long may it beat!
